Cooperation in Developing Antinori Research Center at Ankober

A meeting of Italian and Ethiopian institutions decided to cooperate in developing in Ankober a research center in memory of Orazio Antinori (1811-1882). The center will facilitate research on knowledge, conservation and management of the natural resources of Ethiopian highland with special reference to Ankober to be conducted by Italian and Ethiopian researchers and students. Orazio Antinori was an Italian explorer and naturalist who lived and conducted research between 1876 -1882 in Ankober. He died and was buried there. The Center will facilitate research to be conducted by researchers and students of Ethiopian and Italian institutions. To start with the research will concentrate on Ankober and will expand to other areas in the course of the time. The center, managed by ADWDA, is supported by the Italian Geographical Society, Perugia University and the Increase Peoples Opportunities, IPO. The meeting was hosted by Horn of Africa, Regional Environmental Center and Network at Addis Ababa University in cooperation with Ankober Development Association (AWDA).
The center is intended to provide researchers with simple but comfortable place to stay obtain rural transportation and coordinate research undertakings of several institutions.
The meeting formed a working group to work out an appropriate Memorandum
of Understanding consisting of Horn of Africa, Regional Environmental Center and Network Addis Ababa University, Italian
Geographical society and AWDA. The

The construction of Health Post at
Tscheffa is progressing

The difficult part in the construction of the Health Post, especially clearing the surface and laying the foundation has been done. The community has supplied stone and some po
les for the construction. Building materials have been purchased and the building of the walls with hollow block is done. There was some delay in the earlier months due to farming during the harvesting and small raining season when labour shortage occur.
Construction of the Health Post has been resume as of end of November thanks to the funding of our Donors in Germany.
Graciously family Reinsberg contributed additional 10 000 Euro for finalizing the construction that should be done in a couple of months.
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED IN WASHINGTON

On December 7, 2011 a meeting was held in Washington DC at Etete Restaurant to support development efforts in Ethiopia. The meeting was hosted by Ato Tesfaye kebede of the Etete Restaurant. Present were W/o Tsedale Kebede, Ato Ayalew Mandefro, Ato Ephrem Asebe, W/o Genet Mitike, Ato Fisseha Zewde, W/o Amsale W.Giorgis and Dr. Haile Gabriel Dagne.
Organizing committee
After some discussion the group decided to elect the following members to contact more people and organize and establish a standing committee to SUPPORT PROJECTS on sustainable manner.

It was decided that Dr. Haile Gabriel Dagne AWDA chairpeson will give support from Addis as necessary.
Objective
The aim of the standing committee will be to attract, mobilize and contact individuals on sustainable manner to support development efforts in rural Ethiopia with special reference to Ankober district.
The strategy
''To think big but start small''. Accordingly, the standing committee will aim attracting interested individuals to support projects such as covering degraded highlands with planting highland fruit trees like apple, or combatting malnutrion of pregnant mothers and children through vegetable growing projects, poultry farm, beekeeping, etc. In the course of time, this might be extended to financing bigger projects in other neighbouring districts as well.
Implementation
Ankober Woreda Development Association (AWDA), a registered organization, will take as partner the responsibility in implementing the supported projects and report.

The Minister of Education & high officials visited the AWDA stand at the Ankober Bazar on Sunday, 30.1.2011. AWDA presented its development program activities in Ankober with pictures and displays.
The highland fruit trees programs, the construction of the Health Post with participation of farming communities, the Herbal research laboratory, the ICT training center are some of the program activities the guests have visited. The minister appreciated the products of the herbal medicinal research from Ankober plants conducted in cooperation with Debre Berhan University and IPO, an Italian NGO.

Laying the foundation of Health Post
Community members have come up with labour force and started digging the foundation of the Health Post building.
Tscheffa Health Post Construction site cleared
The construction of the Tcheffa Health Post was delayed due
to the rough surface that could not be levelled by labour. On Nov. 5 a bulldozzer was hired for 2000 Birr and has levelled the surface. Following this, on the 11th of November the district construction superviser laid the plan of the health post building on the ground and with that allowed the digging for the foundation.

The Ankober community has been encouraged by the news that the family Reinsberg and friends are raising substatntial amount of money for the construction of a Health Post in Tsceffa village to serve some 5000 community members. The District administration provided large area in addition to exisiting one in order to allow the Health Post to expand in the future. About 50 community members came together on October 4 and collected stones for the foundation. They also pledged to provided poles and assist in labour during the construction. In July 2010 113,000 Birr has been transferred from Germany. Now the Health Post account has 125,000 Birr all in all.
On October 30 community members were active in clearly the site so that the constructor can start with the construction.
Inauguration of Medicinal Plants Research Laboratory
At Ancient Ankober

The laboratory is established in ancient Ankober in the framework of cooperation between the Italian NGO “Increasing Peoples Opportunity” (IPO) and Ankober Woreda Development Association (AWDA) in promoting community Herbal Care. Work started in 2008 in establishing the laboratory that would produce galenical preparations from traditionally and internationally known plants benefiting the communities of the area. The laboratory has its own garden, a drying room and a laboratory on a land provided by the Ankober Woreda administration. IPO and AWDa made special agreement with Debre Berhan University to develop the center on sustainable way.
To start with, IPO equipped the laboratory and provided a pharmacist expert from Italy, Mr. Ludwig Alzetta who conducted for about eight weeks technical training on galenical preparations with eight staff members of Debre Berhan University. The University staff is expected to continue conducting research at the Laboratory on the medicinal plants and produce galenical preparations benefiting communities.
The Laboratory was officially opened on Saturday June 5, 2010 in the presence of about 150 invited guests. Several department heads of the Woreda Administration, elders and representatives of the communities surrounding the laboratory and Debre Berhan University Vice-presidents and Department heads were present. The Ribbon to officially open the center was cut by Mr. Filippo Guidi, the program director of the donor organization, “Association Street Spirits” from Italy, the Vice-president of Debre Berhan Univesity Dr. Tamire Zewdu and the representative of Woreda administration.

Dr. Kassa Demissie, Community Service Director and Ato Abebe Tadesse Director of Research and Development also attended the session. They all expressed their satisfaction and declared their intention to support the center.
The occasion was facilitated by Dr. Haile Gabriel Dagne, Board Chairman of AWDA.
